Working with me

Sometimes a garden can be revitalised by new planting alone or a complete redesign of the space is required. I work in several ways depending on a client’s requirements offering One off Consultations, stand alone Planting Plans and a Full Design Service.

Please get in touch to discuss how I could help you.

One Off Consultation

A One Off Consultation is a great way to talk through ideas you may already have, get some inspiration from a fresh set of eyes and obtain advice on the layout, how to approach selecting materials or the right kind of planting for your garden and soil.

Full Design

If you require a full redesign of your garden I can work with you to create a set of drawings for you to obtain like for like quotes from a Landscaper and for your garden to be built from.

I have outlined below the different stages of the design process along with other services that I offer.

Initial Consultation

This is an informal meeting to note down your requirements, discuss any thoughts and ideas you may have and to generally get to know one another. It is also an opportunity for me to have a look around your garden, making note of the surrounding area, style of architecture etc so I can create a detailed personal brief for you.

After the meeting I will send you a written copy of the brief and a breakdown of my services and fees, clearly explaining the stages (and costs) involved. Once accepted by you, I will start working on the design.

Site Survey & Analysis

To be able to create a design which fits perfectly in your garden, a comprehensive survey of the existing garden is carried out, either by myself or, for larger or complicated sites, by a qualified surveyor. This is to record measurements, levels, features, boundaries, access, good and bad views, plants, trees, aspect, soil analysis etc. From this information a scale survey plan is produced from which the design is worked on.

The Design

Concept Plan

Our next meeting will be to look at my initial design which will include the proposed layout, features, materials, trees and style of planting. The concept plan is open to discussion, feedback is welcome and any changes can be agreed at this stage.

Detailed Outline Plan

Once I have completed the design, including any required changes, I will come and present the Outline Plan to you. This is a detailed, coloured plan, drawn to scale, from which your garden will be built.

Planting Plan

Either as a stand-alone service or as part of a full garden design, this is an accurate plan drawn to scale, showing the names, numbers and positioning of all the plants in the garden. All plants are carefully selected not only to create the right “look” or atmosphere but to also work hard and thrive.

“Thank you for working with us to transform our old, high maintenance garden into a more unified and manageable space. It’s looking great. The plants are starting to establish themselves and the garden is much more of a pleasure to work in.”

Mr & Mrs Senior, Sandwich, Kent.

Detailed Drawings and Specifications

For smaller, more straight-forward projects, the Outline plan with its information panel is sufficient for a competent landscape contractor to build the garden. For larger projects I will provide you with a set of drawings; Setting Out Plans, detailed Construction Drawings for steps, retaining walls, ponds etc and a Specification document, which will enable the landscape contractors to accurately price the works and build your garden to the desired specification.

On larger or more complicated designs it may be necessary to consult with experts such as a Structural Engineer, Water expert or Lighting Designer on your behalf.

Other Services

You may prefer to appoint your own contractor, but if not I am able to manage this on your behalf, inviting reputable landscape contractors to tender for the build of your garden.

Project Monitoring

I also offer a project monitoring service with regular site inspections to oversee the build and ensure the work is carried out to time, in budget and to the desired quality.

Plant Supply and Planting

Obviously I love the plant side of things so am more than happy to source and supply the plants and then do the planting to complete your garden.

Maintenance Schedules and Aftercare

Whatever your level of plant knowledge a Maintenance Schedule is a really useful reference document, providing plant and seasonal gardening advice to help you (or your gardener) make the most of your new garden.

As the garden matures I am available for further garden visits to offer advice and make any changes if necessary.
