The Barn Southfleet
With the owners of this award winning Grade II listed Kent Barn conversion being keen gardeners, plants were central to this design. Extending to the front of the barn instead of the back the garden is overlooked by all of the surrounding neighbours, so part of the brief was to create a beautiful view for everyone with some secluded areas for my clients to enjoy as well. The main requirements were the creation of a level lawn in the sloping site, a large sculpture as a focal point, a firepit and of course lots of plants!
Originally the main yard of an old farm the soil in the garden was one the first thing to be investigated and improved. The design comprised of a rather formal square level lawn positioned in the centre of the garden with grass paths and rustic stone steps leading off and up the generous sloping borders of shrubs, perennials and grasses and around the garden. Height was added with trees; 4 large formal evergreen standards around the lawn, a pair of multi stem Amelanchiers and a group of multi stem Birch trees to create the start of a small woodland area. An awkwardly sloping corner was the perfect place to tuck in the firepit. Built with paddlestone walling and finished with bespoke cut sawn sandstone coping it is an intimate space nestled amongst the soft planting.
